Shark Girl by Kelly Bingham is a courageous story about a girl named Jane Arrowood who is forced to overcome the difficulties of going out in public because of the fateful day on the beach when she lost her right arm to a shark. At first because of the name of the book I really didn't give the book a chance until I read the inside. I have not read a book about someone losing an arm or leg so i decided to go for it!
Shark Girl is about a girl named Jane Arrowood who lost her arm when she was attacked by a shark while visiting a beach. The story tells of Jane's constant fight to fit in and look normal and the constant fight with herself. While she also has to overcome the constant fear of going back to SCHOOL! where everyone there calls her Shark Girl! She also has to deal with the pain of learning to draw again with her left hand and the goal of becoming an artist. This story is truly inspiring and shows the strength that a person can have to keep trying!!
One thing I liked about the book was that the author put parts of the story on every page so some pages had a lot of paragraphs and other had maybe two or three. I also like how the author put poems, letters, telephone conversations, television news and newspaper clippings in the book to help explain the story. I did not like how the author ended the book ( sorry can't tell you how it ended). I also did not like how the beginning had one part that lasted forever and the rest was really fast without a lot of information. This book is for 7th grade and up and would recommend it to people who like true stories and people who like sad and inspiring stories. This was a good book that I would recommend to a friend.
