The Secret Life of Bees

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is an inspiring book about a girl in 1964 named Lilly and her best friend Rosaleen who run away from her dads Peach orchard and run into the most unlikely trio. I choose the book because when I saw the movie I loved it and knew that the book would be even better.

Secret Life of Bees is about a fourteen year old girl named Lilly Owens, who lives with her harsh father T-ray. Lilly's life in Sylvan, North Carolina living on a peach farm was built around the hard memory of her mothers death. The only thing that made life happy was a black woman Rosaleen who stepped in as her best friend and her mother. But, when Rosaleen insults these racist men and is sent to jail, Lilly jumps in and breaks her free. This book is a amazing story about two girls who hit the road and run into August, May, June who are a black group of beekeepers that take them into there family.

One thing I like about the book was that the Author really took you into Lilly's world and what it was like in 1964. Another thing I liked was that the author put little quotes in the beginning of the chapters about bees that actually went with what was happening in the book. I didn't like how sometimes it would ramble on about stuff that we didn't need to know. I also didn't like how sometimes the book would get really slow at points and keep going on about the same thing. This is a book for 7th grade and up and a lot of people who like stories that tell a inspiring story or stories that make you feel really happy and lucky would really like this book.
