The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, is a novel about a 16 year old girl named Katniss Everdeen. She lives in Panam, a future North America. There are 12 districts in Panam. There used to be 13, but it was destroyed by the Capital for rebelling. Katniss lives in District 12.  The story is about an event that takes place every year. This event is called the Reaping. One boy and one girl from each district is picked to take part in a fight to the death to entertain the capital. The winner receives unlimited food and shelter for their families.

Katniss is very poor and lives with her mother and sister in a small area in District 12 called the Seam. After a nasty explosion in the mines, Katniss' father was killed and now she must hold the family together. Leaving the District without authority is strictly forbidden, and is punishable by death. Katniss breaks                                       this rule every day to go hunting, in order to feed her family.

It's the Reaping, and Katniss' younger sister, Prim, is scared. Katniss assures her
her name will not be picked because it's only been in once. When Prim's name is
called, Katniss freaks out and volunteers as tribute, which hasn't happened for a
                                    long time.
