The Bad Beginning

The book "The Bad Beginning" is the first of the series called "The Series of Unfortunate Events". It is written by Lemony Snicket. The genre of this book is fiction and mystery. There are few happy moments in this book. I chose to read this book because my brither read the series and enjoyed it. Three siblings- Violet, the oldest, Klaus, the middle child, and Sunny, the youngest and still an infant- have just found out that their parents died in a house fire, along with all their belongings. Their parents Will says they must live with a relative, so they are sent to live with a distant relative named Count Olaf. He is a terrible man and he makes them do chores for no reason at all. His neighbor, Justice Strauss, is a very nice woman with a large library for the children to use at any time. The Baudelaire children do not like Count Olaf and all he wants from them is their large fortune. He has concocted a plan to steal the fortune and kill the children. They are to do as he says or else Sunny will be dropped from the tower. His plan is to trick Violet into marrying him and stealing the money. The children are not fooled by his devilish ways and concoct their own plan against him.
Two things I like about this book is that it was a mystery, which are the books I like, and also that it has tough words but there is always a definition nearby. Two things I did not like about this book is that the chapters are so long and that there are almost no happy parts to the story. I think this book is a reading level 7/10 and it is appropriate for ages 11 and up. I would recommend this to people who enjoy mysteries, and no happy endings.
